Recipes for a Sustainable Food System in North Carolina Toolkit
North Carolinians deserve a resilient, equitable food system.
North Carolina is home to a wide variety of farmlands, crops, livestock, and manufacturers who contribute to our food environment. In many regions, there is reliable access to high quality and healthy food options, but in others, access is almost nonexistent or vulnerable to food system disruptions.
What you will learn in this toolkit:
This toolkit provides a wide variety of examples of food-equity-centric practices throughout Noth Carolina. From farmers’ markets to land use ordinances, and from local coalitions to grant programs, it highlights many of the local and statewide policies, programs, initiatives, and investments that help shape a more resilient and just food system. It is primarily focused on North Carolina, but there are select entries that come from outside of the state. These entries highlight instances in neighboring states and those with similar political landscapes where creativity and collaboration have sparked innovation.
Entries are organized into five sections:
(1) Food Production and Land Use
(2) Processing and Distribution
(3) Retail, Access, & Markets
(4) Consumption and Educatio
(5) Surplus, Waste, & Recovery
Why use the toolkit:
Learn from others by exploring policies, programs, practices, and investments that support resilience and equity in community food systems. The goal of this toolkit is not to implement these exact programs across the state, but rather to give guidance and show where successes have happened.
